This Tuesday, we’re continuing the indie-kick by tuning into Chamomile off of the Indiana-based artist Patrick “atlas” Kelly’s 2018 EP, flowers.
Chamomile is a track that is as smooth and soothing as it’s title implies. Atlas blends romantic acoustic sounds over a clean, simple, steady drum-beat that envelopes the listener in sentiment and an inexplicable nostalgia.
Both the song and EP are available on SoundCloud, iTunes and Apple Music, Spotify, as well as Amazon, among other platforms.
On flowers, Chamomile is complemented by two other tracks: the classic jazz-inspired lo-fi track discombobulated, and the chill-hop track they/them.
All three songs are personal, sweet, and refreshing, flowing together harmoniously on the EP.
In the case of Chamomile, the song describes an individual that the singer-songwriter fancies but appears too shy to do much about their feelings.

if we were sitting on my carpet sharing chamomile
keep a lot of little secrets that i can’t reveal
until we’re high at 3 am just sharing chamomile
(x2)
i guess…
i’ve got a letters that i’ve written
a few of them i’m tempted to incinerate
they tend to pile up around my desk
at the frequency of sadness and dinner plates
it’s easy to get lost inside of memories
it’s harder to pretend that isn’t bothersome
you told me ’bout your favorite kinds of flowers
so i went to the market and i got you some
i didn’t even break down when i left my house
i didn’t even get anxious when i went out
you know the words never sound quite right when they leave my mouth
but, darling, just finish your tea, and we’ll go lay down
we can go lay down
i often sit and wonder how your hand would feel
if we were sitting on my carpet sharing chamomile
keep a lot of little secrets that i can’t reveal
until we’re high at 3 am just sharing chamomile
As a tea fanatic and night owl myself, I love the image Atlas paints of sitting on their carpet sharing chamomile tea.
“i rap for people on the internet,” the self-described ‘nervous internet entity‘ Atlas writes on their bandcamp profile. “and also make acoustic music and other stuff.”
Although Atlas has come a long way as an artist since the release of their first ep in 2014, foliage, their music has always been a very intimate experience. Kicking off their discography with tracks such as mentalhealthhotline, themeaningoffice, and howhappyareyou? Atlas has always used lo-fi elements to transcribe their thoughts and emotions musically.
While flowers is more polished in comparison to foliage, Atlas continues to implement similar elements such as simple drum loops, and somewhat grainy samples to lure the listener in.
“happy 4/20,” Atlas writes in the description of flowers on SoundCloud. “go tell somebody you love ’em.”
