It’s all too easy to find yourself consumed by the vortex of constant productivity. After all, if you’re not creating something worth sharing on the internet, then what the hell are you doing?
As stacks of to-do lists pile up to your eyes alongside empty coffee mugs, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters: your emotional and physical wellbeing.
Note: “Bug’s Philosophy” is an editorial series of free-writes pulled directly from the pocket-journals of editor Burgundy Bug and are expected to be regarded as they are in their rawest form: opinions based upon personal experiences, as opposed to her typical articles, which are meticulously laiden with hours of research.
It may not seem like it, but self-care is productive. When was the last time you did something that was solely for you and you alone?
Even if your work brings you happiness, there’s still another underlying motivation: financial gain. It’s not an activity that’s just for you.
Take a gander at the scribbly scrawl on your to-do lists: how many of those activities pertain to taking care of yourself? Are you reminding yourself to drink enough water? Get enough sleep? Take breaks?
These seemingly simple staple tasks are central to your wellness and improving the quality of your productivity. If you’re dehydrated, sleep deprived, or burnt out, you’re not operating at maximum capacity. Inevitably, this’ll take a toll on your work.
If you can’t muster the courage to care for yourself simply for the sake of your wellbeing, remember that it affects all aspects of your life. A well-rested and well-nourished you is a you that’s a better friend, lover, and worker.
Next time that nagging voice in the back of your head hisses at you for taking a break, tell it to just shut the fuck up. You’re worth caring for.
Relax — you’ve earned it.
