Summer Makeup Guide by Ela Kaimo

Beauty gurus in the US be like, “This lipstick is perfect for fall! Doesn’t this red-orange lip just scream summer?” I live in the Philippines, where the only two seasons are: hot as hell and raining cats and dogs. So that attitude’s not really applicable here.
I want to talk about my makeup routine for the summer season. I don’t know about y’all, but when it’s hot enough outside to give me a heatstroke, a full face of glam is not at the top of my priority list.
Here’s how I go about my makeup routine during these crazy hot months.
Base
When it’s 31 degrees Celsius, I ain’t messing with heavy liquid foundation or concealer. I sweat a lot, and putting on a medium-full coverage base just means that the foundation will transfer onto my handkerchief as I mop the beads of sweat off my forehead.
Instead, I go for the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder, Pressed: barely any coverage, just a quick way to keep oil at bay. Since it’s pressed in a compact, you can throw it in your purse for touch-ups.
Brows
As the great Jeremy Renner once said, “Brows. Lashes. Lips. Frame the face.”

I’m currently using the Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil in Soft Brunette.
It’s easy to apply and achieve a natural look that isn’t overdone. When applied with a light hand, I can fill in my brows and have them look defined but not blocky.
Lips
Summer lipsticks
Matte liquid lipsticks are awesome at not smearing when I wipe sweat off my upper lip.
My favorite non-smudging, non-budging liquid lipsticks are Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink, Wet n Wild Liquid Catsuit, and Butterfly Kisses Cosmetics Soft & Creamy Matte Liquid Lipstick.
Lately, though, I’ve really been loving the Marc Jacobs Liquid Lip Crayon in Coral Fixation. Its staying power is not the best, but the bright coral color is perfect for the season.

I’m not using highlighter right now because when combined with the humidity, it makes me look even oilier than I usually am.
During this season, I prefer to be low-key with makeup, since all the sweat, grime, and city pollution makes my face itchy if I have too much gunk on my face.
