The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Pa celebrates their 85th season of opera this fall with an exciting lineup of performances.
A Bit of Context…
The AVA was founded by Helen Corning Warden, a member of the Philadelphia Society, in 1934 as she saw a need for vocalists to have a school dedicated towards mastering the arts, according to their website.
85 years later, the AVA upholds Warden’s mission statement. For decades, they have provided tuition-free guidance for talented vocalists who come far and wide to enroll in the academy.
“More than 200 singers from across the globe audition each year for the fewer than eight spots available in each class,” the AVA says in the press release for their 85th opera season. “The program is limited to fewer than 30 total Resident Artists, who are immersed in a uniquely intensive and highly personalized program where they learn from world-renowned faculty.”
Throughout the four year program, Resident Artists gain experience as vocalists and actors while learning a multitude of languages, the history of opera, how to engage in stage combat, and a various other tools to succeed in the realm of opera. Each year, Resident Artists are featured in fully-staged opera products through the academy, as well.
