Alternative rock-metal vocalist Jen Janet shatters internal walls with the release of her sonically-charged single, “I Don’t Belong.”

A Bit of Context…

“A self-described ‘multimedia musical project,’ Jen Janet is an ethereal goth-rock dream,” says the press release for Janet’s latest single. “As the lead vocalist of multiple metal bands (Mimesis, Novarium), she’s dipped her toes into many waters, and has shared the stage with international touring acts such as Saving Abel, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Motionless in White, Puddle of Mudd, Buckcherry, and many more.”

Janet pulls inspiration for her music from her passion for various forms of media, from photography to videography, the press release explains. This is truly apparent in her solo work, which often has lyricism laced with vivid imagery.

In addition to her music career, Janet is also a runway model for multiple brands, including Subaru.

“A true chameleon, Jen combines her many creative layers with darker imagery and symphonic sonic influences to create her current alternative-based style.”

In an instant, Janet’s iridescent vocals shine through the eery, polished instrumentals of “I Don’t Belong.”

Despite the dusky, shadowy nature of the track, Janet’s vocals lift a certain weight off the heavy-rock guitars that create an airy, effortless flow.

The dichotomy between her angelic range and the edge of the instrumentals and a perfect yin and yang. It’s gorgeous.

Each layer to the track immerses the listener further and further. This becomes especially apparent during the bridge and outro, where the different elements are stacked to capture how isolating it is to feel estranged from those around you.

There are so many different components to “I Don’t Belong,” you end up looping it over and over just to fully absorb everything. It’s moves along at a fast-pace and the everchanging nature of the single leaves you so intrigued.

Overall, “I Don’t Belong” is dark and mystical. Although it’s centered the subject of seclusion, it’s reassuring to hear Janet sing about it so beautifully. In many ways, it makes you feel less alone.
