Monthly Newsletter #7: Poetic Justice

This month sure brought us some poetic justice. Wow.

Monthly Recap

We began July with an article about Moutain Dew’s ingenious marketing campaign, “The DEWnited States.”

Then, XtaSeay and I fondly recalled our experience “Hiking Through Bushkill Falls.”

On Independence Day, we gave you some tips for celebrating Fourth of July on the fly.

Poet Marshall James Kavanaugh kickstarted our theme of art and poetry for the month with “Favorite Memory,” a poem he wrote on a typewriter in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia.

Then, we released the poems “longing” and “freedom has a name.”

Afterwards, we covered the open house event Herbology hosted at Founding Farmers to introduce their new King of Prussia dispensary to the community.

Next, we took a moment to discuss the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a nonprofit organization that’s been fighting for your rights for nearly a century.

Then, we released the poem “gazing upon the trees” followed by a full-length review of Bruce Barcott’s incredibly thorough novel, “Weed the People.”

After we published the poem “fire water,” we directed our artists spotlight towards GMonkeez.

We then featured four haikus by Patrick Gillespie as well as a full-length review of Trever Noah’s autobiography, “Born a Crime.”

Following our interview with Health Canada about their recall of various sexual enhancement products, we featured the poems “The Unfound Generation” and “A Million More Did Start” by David Moore.

The next artist in our spotlight was Tiny Teri, followed by The Black Bile’s poems, “To Time Travel” and “The Bible Belt.”

Then, we covered the town hall Rep. Jennifer O’Mara (D-165) held in Marple Township, Pa.

Afterwards, Brouge Morgan shared her poems “Allergies” and “Suspension of Disbelief” with us.

We took a brief poem interlude to dive further into the recent research article published by the American Society for Nutrition about pistachios and their ability to repair DNA.

Jumping back into the swing of things, we featured “The Speaking Soul,” a poem by Mahik’s and “you are alive. i can feel it.” by our editor.

Strain of the Week came back after it’s brief hiatus with XtaSeay and I’s review of Green Line OG x Lime Skunk.

We then reached out to Meredith Park, an artist known on Instagram for her introspective comics, and spoke to her over email to learn more about her work.

After releasing the poem “selfie nation,” we spoke to Grassroots’ head of retail, Talley Wettlaufer, about Herbology’s grand opening in King of Prussia on Jul 22.

Then, we reviewed “The End of the FXXXing World,” a comic book by Charles Forsman that served as the basis of the 2017 Netflix original bearing the same title.

After featuring @finallyfoundagoodusername in our artist spotlight, Fiona McHugh shared with us her poems, “To Those Left Behind” and “Prediction.”

Later, we stepped into the dark side of lemonade stands, exploring the legal mayhem they can land your family in.

Occidendum took the stage in our artist spotlight before McHugh shared two more poems with us, “Femanist” and “The Pavement,” followed by our editor’s poem, “tongue and teeth.”

Last but far from least, we wrapped the month up by directing our artist spotlight towards SuperKirbyLover along with the poem, “shelter in leaves, under trees” before releasing this issue of The Burgundy Zine.

We also published a reviews of the poetry book “Pillow Thoughts” by Courtney Peppernell and Grapefruit Cookies Live Concentrate by Prime Wellness following the release of The Burgundy Zine #7: Art and Poetry.

Going Forward

Going forward, we will begin our theme of “Reflections” for the month of Aug with a post by blogger Camille Mola.
